Study Abroad with UCSC Global Learning

Would you like to study in another country while earning credit toward the UCSC Literature major or minor requirements? Want to read the works of Shakespeare, and then walk the same streets Shakespeare walked? Study Spanish literature while experiencing the art and culture of Barcelona? Would you like to travel on another continent, see wildlife and historical sites you’ve never seen, all while completing your undergraduate studies? Study abroad is for you! 

Study abroad allows students to explore different cultures, develop language skills, and gain valuable experience. The UC Education Abroad Program offers 171 programs in over 40 countries in Africa and the Middle East, the Americas, Asia and Oceania, and Europe. The Study Abroad program also offers courses led by UC faculty, as well as U.S. domestic exchange programs. Many programs offer literature courses that can be applied towards major requirements. Financial aid is accessible to students who study abroad, and scholarships may also be available. 

Academic Planning for Study Abroad

Up to three courses completed abroad may satisfy upper-division literature major requirements, and up to two courses may satisfy upper-division literature minor requirements. EAP courses must transfer back to UCSC as upper division, satisfy a minimum of 4.5 quarter units or three semester units each,  and must be passed with a grade of C (or equivalent) or better.

Literature courses taken abroad may be used to fulfill critical approaches and distribution requirements. A literature course in which texts are read in a non-English language may be used to substitute for LIT 102, Translation Theory.
