Study Abroad

Would you like to study in another country while earning credit toward the UCSC Literature major or minor requirements? Want to read the works of Shakespeare, and then walk the same streets Shakespeare walked? Study Spanish literature while experiencing the art and culture of Barcelona? Would you like to travel on another continent, see wildlife and historical sites you’ve never seen, all while completing your undergraduate studies? Study abroad is for you!

Study abroad allows students to explore different cultures, develop language skills, and gain valuable experience. The UC Education Abroad Program offers 171 programs in over 40 countries in Africa and the Middle East, the Americas, Asia and Oceania, and Europe. The Study Abroad program also offers courses led by UC faculty, as well as U.S. domestic exchange programs. Many programs offer literature courses that can be applied towards major requirements. Financial aid is accessible to students who study abroad, and scholarships may also be available.

UCSC Global Learning

Check out the UCSC Global Learning website or stop by their office for information on how to get started, financing study abroad and scholarship assistance, housing, application deadlines, and more!

Academic Planning for Study Abroad

Up to three courses completed abroad may satisfy upper-division literature major requirements, and up to two courses may satisfy upper-division literature minor requirements. EAP courses must transfer back to UCSC as upper division, satisfy a minimum of 4.5 quarter units or three semester units each,  and must be passed with a grade of C (or equivalent) or better.

Literature courses taken abroad may be used to fulfill critical approaches and distribution requirements. A literature course in which texts are read in a non-English language may be used to substitute for LIT 102, Translation Theory.

Sample Academic Plans

Students are able to easily incorporate study abroad courses into their Literature major or minor requirements. Study Abroad offers options ranging from summer courses to year-long programs. The sample plans below can serve as a starting point for planning your study-abroad adventure. Please meet with a literature adviser in order to make a plan that is specific to your academic goals.

UCEAP Course Catalog

The UCEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously completed by UCEAP students, and indicates how many lower- or upper-division UC quarter units each course was awarded upon transfer.

Petitioning Global Learning Courses

Students may petition to use courses taken through UCEAP for the literature major or minor that are not already pre-approved to satisfy literature major or minor requirements. Save your course syllabi, reading lists, class notes, papers, tests, etc. These materials will help you successfully petition to use your study abroad courses to satisfy literature requirements.

When to Submit Your Petition

You may submit this petition once you identify the courses you plan to take during your time abroad. Please note that Global Learning courses must appear on your UCSC academic record before they will fulfill requirements in the Degree Progress Report. It can take up to four months after the official end date of a UCEAP program for study abroad courses and grades to appear on your UCSC academic record.

How to Submit Your Petition

You’ll need the following in order to submit your Global Learning course petition:

  • The discipline, course number, and title of the course(s) your are petitioning (e.g., XITL 157, Dante’s Commedia).
  • Your final grade for the course(s), if available.
  • Supplementary course materials, including a syllabus and reading list in .PDF or .DOC format. Additional materials may be requested if needed: class notes, papers, tests, etc.
  •  URLs from the MyEAP Course Catalog or other catalogs to the course(s) you are petitioning, if available.

Questions about this petition? Contact the Literature Department.

Important Reminders

The Literature Department may approve a maximum of three (3) upper-division literature courses from UCEAP to satisfy major upper-division requirements, or two (2) upper-division literature courses to satisfy minor requirements. In addition to completing upper-division coursework via UCEAP course work, students may also satisfy the LIT 60/61/80/81 requirement via UCEAP course work.

Any course used for the major or minor must transfer back to UCSC for at least three semester units or 4.5 quarter units, and with a grade of C or better.

In some cases, courses of fewer than 4.5 quarter units or three semester units, on a related topic, may be combined to count as a single course.

Global Seminars are regular UCSC courses, and will be treated the same as courses taken at UCSC.

Pre-Approved Courses

The following course are pre-approved to satisfy the literature major. Courses with a UC number 1 – 99 apply to lower division major requirements, and courses with a UC number 100 and up may apply to upper division requirements. All courses applied to the literature major must be passed with a C or better (or equivalent).

Courses completed abroad that are not pre-approved for the major may be petitioned.
