This form is to be completed, approved and filed with the Literature Department two business days prior to the quarterly add/drop/swap deadlines listed below.
Undeclared majors may not take more than 7 credits of special approval courses per quarter. Students who are declared in a major may only take more than 7 credits of special approval courses per quarter with authorization from their department. (Academic Senate, Santa Cruz Regulation, 6.5, 9.1)
The Individual Studies Course class number will be issued by the sponsoring agency at the time the petition is approved.
Completion of enrollment procedures for the course is your responsibility. PLEASE NOTE: the enrollment system is set up to add classes with a “letter grade” option by default. You should enroll in the independent study using the terms approved on your form.
Enrollment deadlines without late fee:
Fall 2025: Wednesday, October 15. Winter 2026: Monday, January 26. Spring 2026: Friday, April 17.
If you plan to enroll in multiple independent study courses, please submit a separate form for each.
