Akash Kumar

Biography, Education and Training

Akash Kumar is Visiting Assistant Professor of Literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz and Associate Editor of Digital Dante, having served as Managing Editor from 2014-2016. He earned his BA in Comparative Literature from New York University in 2006 and his Ph.D. in Italian and Comparative Literature from Columbia University in 2013. Akash’s research centers on the importing of science and philosophy in the early Italian lyric and Dante and on the implications of intercultural mingling, particularly in the area of games, in the Italian Middle Ages. He has published in the journal Textual Cultures and the Literary Encyclopedia, in the volume Eternity: A History (Oxford University Press, 2016), in the journal Pedagogy (2017) and has a forthcoming essay on Dante and World Literature in the Wiley-Blackwell Companion to World Literature. He has just completed a collaboration with Richard Lansing on the first complete English translation of hte poetry of Giacomo da Lentini (forthcoming from the University of Toronto Press in 2018). Akash is currently working on his first book, Dante’s Elements: Translation and Natural Philosophy from Giacomo da Lentini to the Comedy.
