International Students Note: in addition to normal educational fees, international students (non U.S.-citizens or –permanent residents) are assessed non-resident fees and tuition that, in 2009-2010, are projected to be over $16,000. Unlike U.S. citizens, international students (barring any change in their citizenship or permanent residency status) are not eligible to establish legal California state residency. Therefore, they remain liable for non-resident fees until Advancement to Candidacy (the official status which signals completion of all requirements for the Ph.D. except for the dissertation). Though students in our program normally Advance to Candidacy at the end of their third or in their fourth year of study, the Literature department has implemented a special Accelerated Track for international students prepared to Advance to Candidacy at the end of their first year of study. To be considered for the Accelerated Track, a candidate must hold a Master’s degree or close equivalent and exhibit outstanding preparation and focus in his/her area of study. We also limit this option to students whose projects are well-supported by the faculty strengths in our own department. If you are interested and believe you qualify for consideration for the accelerated program, please contact our graduate program coordinator (Hollie Clausnitzer) so that you may be put in touch with faculty in your area of specialization. For further information, please see the Graduate Division’s Financial Aid page. Click on the link for “Cost of Attending UCSC.”
